Home access remodeling · San Antonio

Access remodeling that works with your VA grant

Ramps, roll-in showers, wider doors and grab bars for veterans and their families. Every estimate is written so your VA agent and your VSO can read it.

VA home grants

What the VA can put toward your home

VA decides who qualifies and sets each grant's maximum every year. Your VSO or VA has the current figure. We build to what VA approves for you.

  • Specially Adapted Housing (SAH)

For certain permanent, service-connected disabilities. Pays to build, buy or change a home so you can live in it.

  • Special Home Adaptation (SHA)

For a different set of service-connected disabilities. Pays for changes to a home you or your family own.

  • Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA)

For changes to a family member's home while you stay there. It goes with SAH or SHA eligibility.

  • Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA)

For changes a doctor says you need to use your home, such as a ramp or a bathroom fix. It usually takes a prescription.

Bring your VSO

Bring your VSO to the first site walk

A Veterans Service Officer (VSO) helps veterans with VA claims and grant applications, usually at no charge.

Invite yours to the visit. We measure and sketch; they ask about the paperwork. You leave with one plan that both of us have seen.

What to bring

  • Your VSO's name and number

  • Your VA rating letter, if you have one

  • A note from your doctor or therapist on what you need

  • Photos of the entry and the bathroom

  • 02

    Written estimate

Scope, materials and permits on separate lines, in words your VA agent can check.

The city permit, your HOA and, on a grant job, VA's review. We handle what's ours and tell you the rest.

  • 04

    The build

A named lead, a masked floor and a swept house at the end of every day.

What families say

After the work, in their words

“Lisette met us at our VSO's office with the measurements already written down. The estimate had the shower, the bars and the permit on separate lines, and the VA agent had no questions about it.”

Hilario B.Veteran, roll-in shower

“They told us the ramp needed 24 feet before we picked a material. The crew masked the front door and swept up every afternoon.”

Virgilia P.Ramp for her husband

“Two bedroom doors widened and the thresholds gone. Sedrick showed me the blocking inside the wall before the drywall went up.”

Herman K.Veteran, wider doors

“Gerson explained everything to my mother in Spanish, and Dionne wrote down what she wanted: the bar by the toilet and a seat in the shower.”

Questions

Before you call

Do you apply for the VA grant for me?

No. You apply with VA, and a VSO can help at no charge. We write the estimate and the scope VA's agent will want to see.

What if I don't qualify for a grant?

You can still hire us. Some veterans qualify for HISA, a smaller grant, and some pay for the work themselves. The estimate is written the same way.

Is my house built before 1978?

Paint in older homes can contain lead. EPA's rule covers paid work that disturbs painted surfaces in those homes, and our firm is certified to follow it. Tell us the year at the site walk.

Do you work on weekends?

Site walks can be Saturday by appointment. The crew works weekdays.

Does someone on the crew speak Spanish?

Yes, Lisette and Gerson do. Ask for either when you call.
